A healthcare manager said something that deeply moved me:
Statistics showing increasing mental health issues don't necessarily mean more people are suffering — we're just measuring it more. But paradoxically, all this measurement and awareness might actually be making the situation worse.
In today's welfare systems, we face a choice similar to Neo's in The Matrix. Should we continue building, operating in, and living within the Machine with all its rules, assumptions, and expectations, or do we need to pause and ask ourselves if we've become part of the problem?
Take child welfare services as an example. Through formal reporting mechanisms, routines, forms, and tools, we've built a powerful machine for identifying vulnerable children. But when every concern becomes a potential report that must be made for someone else, every observation a formal note — are we really protecting children better? Or are we unconsciously creating a society where adults step back from their natural responsibility to care about children and their relationships in their immediate environment?
The Machine doesn't just measure reality — it shapes it. Every new routine and reporting system creates new behavioral patterns that affect how we engage in our communities. In our pursuit to protect society's most vulnerable, we might be weakening the fundamental human bonds that constitute the real social safety net.
This isn't an argument against systematic methods. The real question is how we preserve our human responsibility while navigating the systems we've created. The path forward lies in conscious integration — we need both the Machine's systematic approach and spaces for genuine human connection.
The rabbit hole is deep, but perhaps the real insight lies in learning to move between the world of human responsibility and systematic formalized knowledge, keeping both in perspective for the development of Human & Machine.
